Elmer Van de Streek is the son of Henry Van de Streek and Ella Hulleman.
Elmer Gordon Van de Streek was born on November 21, 1917 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the fifth child of Henry and Ella (Hulleman) Van de Streek. He attended the First Methodist Church of St Cloud along with his mother and father and his siblings where they were encouraged to memorize Bible verses and were asked to recite them before their peers. Never a sunday was missed unless there was illness.
In all good Holland Dutch families, the children were expected to "earn their keep." His mother secured for him a paper route which became quite a challage during the winter months in -20 weather and especially so since he inherited a girl's bicycle from his sister.
He attended elementary and high school in St. Cloud and was graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1935. He then became employed with the Great Nothern Railroad.
On January 28, 1940 he was united in marriage to Blanche Jedlicka in Clarissa, Minnesota. Born 17 Dec 1914 in Clarissa, Minnesota, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jedlicka.
Elmer was inducted into the armed forces in May of 1942, serving in the Medical/Dental Corps and then as Postmaster at the McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, Texas until his Honorable Discharge in October 1945. He resumed his employment with the Great Northern Railroad until 1949 when he entered into partnership with his oldest brother as a furrier in Minot, North Dakota.
The family left North Dakota in 1951 and took up residence in Seattle, Washington. Those were growing, bonding years for the family. "Van," as he was called, was transferred by his employer, Century Metalcraft Corp., from Seattle to Los Angeles in 1956 where he was employed in the Accounting Division.
Elmer's ashes spread over Battle Lake, Minnesota.
