MINOT (N.D)DAILY NEWS, JULY 8, 1999, BERT VAN DE STREEK: Bert was born April 23, 1909, in Hasty, Minnesota, to Henry and Ella Van de Streek. He was raised and educated in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he was an apprentice furrier. He married Alice Benson Dec. 25, 1935, in Crosby, Minnesota. He and his wife worked in a Navy shipyard in Bremerton, Washington during World War II. He established Van de Streek Furs in 1945, which he owned and operated until he retired in 1974. He and his wife and partner, Madge Power, owned and operated Al-Ma shop, a fabric store, from 1956 to 1974. His wife died in February 1982. He worked as a furrier for Porter Brothers Hide and Fur Division in the late 1970s. Final Resting Place: Rosehill Memorial Place, Minot, North Dakota.

MINOT (N.D.)DAILY NEWS,FRI., FEB 5, 1982: Alice Benson was born Sept 1, 1912, In Deerwood, Minnesota and was reared at Crosby, Minn. She studied nursing at the Francis Asbury School of Nursing in Minneapolis, and in 1933, became a registered nurse. She married Bert Van de Streek Dec. 25, 1935 in Crosby, Minnesota. They lived in St Coud, Minnesota, until 1942, moving then to Bremerton, Washington, where both were employed in the naval shipyards. They came to Minot in 1945, and that same year, opened Van de Streek Furs. In 1956, Mrs Van de Streek and Mrs Madge Power of Minot opened the Al-Ma shop, a dry goods business in Minot. Both businesses were closed when the owners retired in 1974. Mrs Van de Streek was a member of Vincent United Church, the order of Eastern Star, the Book and Thimble and the Quota clubs of Minot. Final Resting Place: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, North Dakota.

Hendrik (Henry) Van De Streek was born on October 1, 1881 to Beert van de Streek and Hendrikje Tuinman in Oldebrook, Gelderland, Netherlands. Very little is known about his life in Holland, only that he attended school through the sixth grade and then became a gardener in a park. It was not unusual for boys to leave school after the sixth grade because the parents felt that a young lad of thirteen or fourteen was old enough to hold a job and help support the family.

Henry came to America with his mother in 1903 to the same region of Wisconsin where his brothers, John and Art, and his sister, Bertha Bille's family were farming. He worked as a farmhand, but didn't like farm work, so moved on to Lynden, Washington. He worked there for two years, but his mother was so lonesome for him, she kept asking him to come to see her. It was on this visit to Waupun that Henry saw the girl who would become his bride and share his life for fifty-four years. He married Aartje Frederika Johanna (Ella) Hulleman 07, Sept 1908 in Waupun, Fond Du Lac Co., Wisconsin.

A job offer was presented to Henry in Hasty, Minnesota shortly after their marriage. After two years in Hasty, Henry heard of employment openings in St. Cloud at the Great Northern Railroad carshops. He worked at the shops for approximately 38 years, advancing to the position of Supervisor over a crew of men who loaded the boxcars for dispatchment to all parts of the country.

In 1946, on advice from his doctor, he retired and sold their home and moved to Ripon, California. They loved this land of warmth and grew different flowers, nut and fruit trees acclimated to this area. He died on November 17, 1962. Ella died February 10,1972. They are buried in the Ripon Cemetery, Ripon, California.

Hendrikje Tuinman was born July 14, 1840 in Doornspijk (Elburg) Gelderland, Netherlands, daughter of Aart Tuinman and Beertje van de Beek. She married Beert Vande Streek, March 7, 1863 in Oldebroek, Netherlands. After Beert's death, Hendrikje (Tuinman) Vande Streek immigrated to North America with her son Aart and his family; and her youngest son, Hendrik in 1903. Hendrikje is buried in Alto Cemetery, Alto, Fond Du Lac Co. Wisconsin.
